Who Cares

(A writing to Dewey Gillespie from a very respected friend AJH)

The R.A.T. series of flies was originated and introduced in 1911 by Roy Angus Thompson whose initials, R.A.T. represents this oddly named series.

In my opinion, according to historians, the R.A.T. series is a can of worms.  Just to name a few who were awarded glory for the R.A.T. series are: Col. Ambrose Monell, Dr. O. Summers, Dr. D. Clough, Herb Howard, and the debate goes on and on and on.

The “Rusty Rat” is far and away the most popular of the R.A.T. flies and may, in fact, be the most frequently fished Atlantic salmon fly of all time.  Again the debate, originator, Dr. O. Summers or J. C. Arsenault?

It’s like discussing politics and religion when talking R.A.T.s.  Who cares! The R.A.T. flies all take fish.  As long as there are fly fishers, the debate should last forever and ever.
